What are the odds for the 2023 Triple J Hottest 100 #1

THE FAVOURITE

‘Say Nothing’ – Flume (feat: MAY-A): $1.85

The title of Flume's newest release, 'Say Nothing', is certainly an apt description for much of the artist's works. Even more impressive, however, is its remarkable staying power - set to be released in February 2022!

With Flume being one of Australia's most successful acts in the last decade, their name recognition alone gives them an edge. Still, it is MAY-A (or Maya Cumming)’s captivating vocals that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on listeners and make this song remain stuck in your head for days to come!

The hypnotic, luminous tune of "Say Nothing" stands out as a masterpiece and whether it secures Flume's second Hottest 100 number one spot or not, the fact that he has gone from 'Say It' to 'Say Nothing' in six years speaks volumes about his current mental state.

CONTENDERS

‘B.O.T.A’ (‘Baddest Of Them All’) – Eliza Rose & Interplanetary Criminal:

Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal’s ‘Baddest Of Them All’ is a left-field song that recently went viral on TikTok. The track contains elements of multiple classics from the 90s through to the 00s, making for an eclectic blend. In fact, it would fit perfectly onto a Ministry of Sound compilation album from the mid 2000s - especially considering it samples an early-90s dance hook!

This upbeat, wild track will surely have listeners grooving on the dancefloor and could potentially reach number one on the charts! It wouldn't be a surprise to see it break into the top 3.

‘In The Wake of Your Leave’ – Gang of Youths: $5.50

If Gang of Youths got up with ‘In The Wake of Your Leave’, it would be a) remarkable, b) huge, c) one of more meaningful, heartfelt tunes to top the list, ever, and d) not actually a giant surprise.

This is, after all, the band that landed three top 10 tunes in 2017 (’Let Me Down Easy’, ‘The Deepest Sighs, The Frankest Shadows’, and ‘What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?’ respectively) and just like most of the album that birthed it, ‘ITWOYL’ is still an absolute gut-punch of a tune. A moving homage to singer Dave Le‘aupepe’s father, it would be a worthy winner.

‘Stars In My Eyes’ – Ball Park Music: $15

If you're looking for a song to represent the overlooked and underrated, 'Stars In My Eyes' has got it all. Released in March of last year, this track still stands strong amidst its peers as an anthem for those who have continued pushing forward despite their struggles. Moreover, it's both musically captivating and energetically uplifting; the key-led hook two-thirds of the way through is sure to get your hands raised high towards the sky!

‘Hardlight’ – Spacey Jane: $10

The Fremantle band has been making waves over the past few years, with several of their songs entering into the Hottest 100. The irresistible jangle of 'Hardlight' is guaranteed to make its way into the Top 5 and could potentially even outrank The Rubens in an unexpected victory due to its immense popularity among music lovers.

Besides 'Hardlight', listen out for other great tracks such as ‘Sitting Up’, ‘It’s Been A Long Day’, ‘Pulling Through’ and the evocative ballad ‘Yet' from their latest album.

DARK HORSES

One of the most enjoyable aspects of listening to the Hottest 100 is discovering which songs could have easily made it into the Top 10 - and there are plenty to choose from!

Gorillaz and Tame Impala's "New Gold" is a perfect choice if you're looking for a legendary collaboration. Steve Lacy's jam-packed hit, "Bad Habit," has been wildly popular since its release. And who could forget King Stingray’s ‘Camp Dog’? This year it caused an absolute uproar across the nation.

Undoubtedly, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers' spellbinding 'Girl Sports' is a must for any Top 10 list. Paramore's 'This Is Why', as well as Fred again..’Delilah (pull me out of this)' are equally deserving spots in the same ranking.
